No one believed that Michelle would be able to win this jockey tournament because she was a girl, and most of the jockey players are boys, John Richards stayed with Michelle, believing that she will be able to win.
Paddy Payne is Michelle's father, he is a former jockey player and horse trainer. He allowed Payne to try this sport early in her life. She was able to participate in her first horse race at the age of 15 riding Reigning, the horse that Paddy trained. Michelle has planned on quitting jockey, but Paddy told her to not rush her decisions.
Darren Weir is Michelle's trainer. He trained many horses as well. He and John Richards believed that she could win the Melbourne Cup, while most of the other people wanted to kick her off the horses. Weir gave her a chance to try this tournament after she fell of a horse and fractured her skull.

People always doubted her because she was girl and this is mainly a male sport, but she still was able to beat the other jockeys. She has fell so many times off a horse during a race, she even bruised her shoulder and fractured her skull, but she was still able to get back on a horse and win a tournament. Michelle is a female activist because she believed that she can take on males and can do what males do. Many thought she couldn't win, but she ended up being the first female to win.
